September 1st, 2005 Calgary While everyone was out working today, I did laundry and went shopping. All I was looking for was another book by Kurt Vonnegut, but Coles and the University book store had none. I'll have to go further away to find one, another day. Later on, my cousin Brock and his wife Marcie were moving into an apartment near by, so I helped them. My Uncle Pat was there, as well as my Aunt Karen and her kids, Zack and Jenessa. The visit was nice but short. I then came back to Eric's where we stayed for the rest of the night.
I went back to C.O.P. for some good riding. I was hoping to see Michelle but she wasn't around. Ah well. I met some young local kids and they showed me a few good stunts I hadn't seen last time. They weren't bad riders them selves so I stuck with them for a while. After I was finished riding, I met up with Sean. He's moving to Lethbridge tomorrow so we got some beer and started drinking, his good bye party. Eric and Bob came home later and started up with us. Bryce showed up last. The night was spent drinking and playing bocci ball. Haha.
Sylvia arrived in Calgary today, but not until 4 pm. Eric, Bob, and I hit up the Big Easy gentlemen's bar for lunch. The food, billiards, and atmosphere was great. Then we got Sylvia and right away packed up to go camping. Whoo! It was dark when we arrived. The campground was pretty neat, built on a steep, forested hill, with many small terraces for tents and fires. All the sites were walk in only so no RVs or trailers were here. All camping was: Bob, Sylvia, the dog, Eric, Debbie, Darren, Jillian, and Aaron. We drank by the camp fire all night.
We stayed at the campground for a while in the morning, playing bocci ball and enjoying the sunshine. When we got back to Calgary, we ordered Chinese food and watched The Jacket. It's a great movie but I can't really explain it. Watch it. :)
What a day today was! To start off, it was the Labor Day Classic's in the CFL. Eric and I's original idea was to drink in Eric's front yard, and then head to Moose McGuire's for the game. We were out of beer so decided to walk to the liquor store. The get there, we had to walk through the stadium parking lot just as the game was about to start. It was busy. A scalper wanted us to by tickets for $35 each, we kept walking. Then he came to us as was like, "I just need to get rid of these now, $20 each." Done! We still went and got some beer anyway and drank them quickly before going into the stadium, only missing the first Quarter. The game was Calgary vs. Edmonton. The open stadium was packed and loud. Anywhere you sit is a good seat. We were up at in the 56th row and fully enjoyed the game. Edmonton was way up by half, but Calgary came back to within 2, and almost tied it, but not quite. Final score was 35-33, favoring Edmonton. During the game a fight broke out in the stands, about 10 seats down from us. 2 guys were lipping each other off but didn't look like they were wanting to go as far as a fight, but the crowd pushed them to it. They were quickly kicked out by security. Haha. After the game, Eric and I went back to his front yard and drank some more in the sun, watching the busy street. Some Edmonton fans came over, waiting for a taxi, so we invited them into the yard for a drink. 2 guys and 2 girls, I don't remember their names. It took about 30 min for the taxi to get here which was good, we were all having a great time. Eric then remembered he had to play beach volleyball tonight, and they needed an extra player. I was in. It was a blast, and the final tournament. We placed 2nd over all, but should have won. Ah well. We all went for dinner afterwards at Original Joes. The team that beat us told Eric and I where they were going for drinks, and said we should stop by. So we found them later on and hung out for a while. It was a great night. Before I went to bed, Debbie came over with some cookies and cup cakes for me to take on my trip tomorrow. Score! Thanks Debbie.
I left Calgary after saying good byes. The drive through the Rockies was great. Those mountains showed me that after seeing so much else, I'd forgotten how big they are. Wow! Some areas of the windy climbing and falling roads you can't see the sky cause the mountains are so high. I'm glad to be back in BC for sure! Biking tomorrow will be great. So much downhill! Haha. I reached Kamloops just as it was getting dark, and continued a little ways north till I arrived at Paul Lake Provincial Park. It's dark so I can't really see what it's like. I set up and went to bed.
I woke up early due to the cold. It was a nice day out otherwise. I packed up and checked out the campground. Tall pine trees are everywhere and the sites are nice a private, and built on the side of a mountain. About 15 minutes down a steep trail brings you to and nice, small fishing lake. There are no showers here though, the first campground I've been to that didn't have them. It was then off to Sun Peaks ski hill for some biking, some of the best in BC. But once I arrived I found out that last week was the last full week they were open, now just the weekends. Damn! It was either wait 2 days or head home. Home sounded good. The drive was great! Scenic, sunny, and familiar territory made me excited. I stopped quickly at Chapters, in Kelowna, and picked up Slapstick, by Kurt Vonnegut. I can't wait to start it. The at last I was in Penticton, and home! First thing was to call my riding buddies, Eric Chau and Ryan Kerr, to see what they were up to. "Lets go biking." Haha. I quickly unpacked the truck and was gone again. We spent the rest of the day light dirt jumping and blazing. Chau showed me his no footer he's learnt, so I had to try it. Success! We all rode well and no one bailed. What a great end to an absolutely incredible adventure. I'm almost sad it's over, but I can't wait to further my life. So really, the adventure has only begun. Peace! Mike Hubbard
